C design Inc. Receives AIA NC Design Award

The American Institute of Architects North Carolina (AIANC) chapter awarded architectural firm C design Inc. and consultant Marley Carroll the state’s Woodworks© Wood Award for the Duke Energy Pavilion. The award recognizes creativity and innovation of projects by AIANC members that specify, design or build commercial, industrial and institutional projects with wood.  The award is given annually to projects across the world designed by North Carolina architects. Firms must have an office in North Carolina and the project must be designed with the last ten years to be eligible.

As part of a $1 million Duke Energy Foundation grant to the YMCA of Greater Charlotte made in 2006, the new award-winning structure is centrally located on the property and provides the ideal space for campers to engage in hands-on environmental learning. The facility also offers summer campers a place to play basketball and volleyball out of the elements and features a dynamic arch-like structural system that spans approximately 70 feet.  The space will also be utilized for skits, talent shows and other evening programs. The YMCA of Greater Charlotte and Duke Energy will celebrate the grand opening of the new 10,500-square-foot Duke Energy Pavilion on September 22 at 11:30am.
